The Crayfish Party

Crayfish Party No where is the crayfish so passionately worshipped as in Sweden. Part of the reason is gastronomic, but it has above all become a ritual meal surrounded by all kinds of accessories, preferably also by an authentic full moon. In the middle of August, the Swedes meet up with their friends to enjoy a crayfish party filled with food, drink, songs and decorations in bright colors.

Around the beginning of the 20th century, the Swedish stocks of signal crayfish were being over fished. To deal with the threat of extinction, the authorities introduced restrictions on fishing to merely a few weeks in August. Since the crayfish eating middle-class had to go without the delicacy until late summer, their return to the table became a reason for celebration - and the crayfish party was born.

Today, despite the fact that most crayfish are imported from the USA, China and Turkey - the tradition lives on and has the same format throughout the country. The crayfish are boiled in a decoction of dill and eaten with bread and tasty hard cheese. Apart from the crayfish, a crayfish party usually includes schnapps, songs, silly hats with crayfish designs and decorations in the form of paper lanterns sporting the man in the moon.
